Master filmmaker Wim Wenders often takes inspiration and makes love letters to cities, and Perfect Days is inspired by a real-life urban renewal project known as the ‘The Tokyo Toilet.’ Japanese superstar Kôji Yakusho in the lead solely and almost completely without a dialogue takes on the film. Hirayama is a toilet cleaner who takes joy in his work with detail, pride, and dedication – perfecting the art of repetition as tradition and harmony. A series of unexpected encounters gradually reveal more of his past. A deeply moving and poetic reflection on finding beauty in the everyday world, the small wonders of everyday life that make our existences worthwhile – cassette tapes, sunlight beams filtered through trees, books, and sweet encounters. Perfect Days takes its name from the Lou Reed classic ‘Perfect Day,’ was announced as Japan’s Oscars candidate and shortlisted.
This film is screened in collaboration with MUBI.
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
