Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Man Ray’s first film in 1923, comes the very first 4K restoration of his cult classic silent films, with an exclusive soundtrack composed and performed by Jim Jarmusch and Carter Logan’s band SQÜRL. Featuring Man Ray’s four experimental, avant-garde short films, Le Retour à la Raison / Return to Reason (1923), Emak-Bakia (1926), L’Étoile de mer / The Starfish (1928), and Les Mystères du Château du Dé / The Mysteries of the Château of Dice (1929), Return to Reason is a dive into the surrealist and dreamlike world of one of the most prolific American visual artists. The restoration process sourced original prints from various parts of the world, and the world premiere of the restored copy was made within the Cannes Classics. American visual artist Man Ray, who spent most of his career in Paris, was a pioneer of the Dada and Surrealist movements, best known for his groundbreaking photography work, typically featuring ‘rayographs.’ His Cinéma pur films transcended and ridiculed character and plot as bourgeois conventions.
This film is screened with the kind contribution of Institut Français.
