Looking back to the past, finding ghosts in the present –like plenty in Japanese cinema– who signal and direct us to significant paths, transitions, and passages, like in life itself... Sidonie Perceval (played by the matchless Isabelle Huppert,) an established French writer, is mourning her deceased husband. Invited to Japan for the re-release of her first book, she is welcomed by her local editor, Kenzo who takes her to Kyoto, the city of shrines and temples. As they travel together through the Japanese spring blossoms, she slowly opens up to him. But the ghost of her husband follows Sidonie. ‘Sidonie in Japan was born of the feelings I experienced when I first discovered Japan in 2013. As soon as I started writing, I thought of Isabelle Huppert’s face,’ says Élise Girard. A melancholic and touching blend of memories and romance, Sidonie in Japan world premiered at Venice Days.
