Based on the legends of nomadic Steppe people such as the Huns, Avars, Magyars, Son of the White Mare is one of the world’s most famous animation films, which – at the 1984 Olympiad of Animation in Los Angeles – was voted one of the six best full-length animations and in the top 50 animations of all time. It is the first full-length production in Hungarian animation history. Its dreamlike visuals comprising geometric forms and mandala-like, circular compositions, almost hypnotic colour shifts, accompanied with an ambient-like score have helped the cult status of this psychedelic masterpiece, astonishing fantasy epic. A white horse gives birth to Son of the White Mare, a boy with superhuman powers, who, as he grows up, embarks on a journey to defeat the dragons that have taken over the cosmos.
