2023 Tokyo Special Jury Prize, Best Actress
Co-directed by Zar Amir, Cannes Best Actress winner for Holy Spider (2022), and Guy Nattiv, the director of Skin, Tatami depicts a judoka and her coach who are forced by the Iranian authorities to withdraw from a match. Set during one very tense day at the world championship in Tbilisi, Georgia, Tatami is simultaneously a sports thriller following an athlete pursuing gold for the first time, and a political thriller about oppression and two enemy countries. Zar Amir herself plays the coach in this engrossing, female-centric, riveting, black and white film where the excitement, tension, action, and pressure gradually heighten. The first feature film to be co-directed by an Iranian and an Israeli filmmaker, and shot secretly in Georgia, Tatami had its world premiere at Venice Film Festival’s Orizzonti section.
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
