Perhaps real talent is telling movies as well as the movies themselves. The touching, bittersweet comedy-drama directed by Danish filmmaker Lone Scherfig (who stole our hearts with Italian for Beginners) from a screenplay by Walter Salles, Rafa Russo, and Isabel Coixet, tells the story of a ‘movie teller’ in a Chilean mining town. Life is hard and precarious at the Atacama Desert, and even more so near the nitrate salt flats. The shining star of the driest place on earth is Maria, a gifted performer, a true artist, who takes on the difficult but rewarding task of recounting the movies she watches to the poor inhabitants of her hometown. Premiering at Toronto Film Festival and later opening the Valladolid Film Festival, The Movie Teller is a must see for film lovers.
