2023 Cannes Grand Prix–Critics Week
Malaysian Oscar candidate Tiger Stripes is a visually striking feminist film that overflows with the ominous vibe of the jungle and the precariousness of childhood innocence. Twelve-year-old Zaffan is the class rebel. The first amongst her friends to hit puberty, she discovers a terrifying secret about her body. Ostracised by her friends and townsfolk, Zaffan fights back, learning that to be free she must embrace the body she feared, emerging as a proud, strong individual. A filmmaker who often explores female body, adolescence, mythology, and identity in her work, Amanda Nell Eu’s horror short It’s Easier to Raise Cattle was screened in 2022 at the festival.
*Scenes of violence/sex might disturb some viewers.
