Rein’s quiet bubble at a small skiing village in the Alps bursts when his extroverted father Gijs comes to visit unannounced. With a certain aura and vanity that covers his age and shadows his son’s presence, Gijs quickly takes centre stage on a back country ski tour. The tension between the two men is palpable, but relentless nature takes over their petty game of dominance. The domineering Alpine panorama and its blinding blanket of snow provides the perfect background for the intense emotional interaction of real-life father and son playing for the first time together, as father and son. Having had its world premiere at Venice Film Festival’s Venice Days section, Alpha is ’a film about the changing nature of masculinity in our society,’ says director van Ewijk, whose Atlantic. was screened at the festival in 2015.
Screened with the support of the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Istanbul.
