Imagine being part of a film crew near Wuhan in January 2020. Aiming to resume the shooting of a film halted ten years earlier, only to share the unexpected challenges as the rumours of a lockdown are heard. The director has to decide whether to halt the filming once again, when eventually everyone left on set is confined to their hotel rooms. Wuhan is quarantined. An Unfinished Film presents what its name suggests, the story of an unfinished film, but is much more with a mix of melodrama, sadness, bursts of joy, and melancholy. Premiered at Cannes within a Special Screening, the film incorporates real-life videos, film footage of director Lou Ye’s earlier films such as Souzhou River (2000), Spring Fever (2009), Mystery (2012) and The Shadow Play (2018), as well as the vertical screen of the mobile phone and split screen, video calls as well as part of the visual language.
