Black Dog tells the all-too-familiar story of a friendship between man and dog, but in unusual circumstances. On the edge of the Gobi Desert in northwest China, Lang returns to his hometown after being released from prison. While working for the local dog patrol to clear the town of stray dogs before the Olympic Games, he forges an unlikely bond with a black dog – a fugitive with a bounty on his head. Chinese filmmaker Guan Hu focuses on the daily lives of people outside the big cities and in more remote parts of China, asking: ’But as individual souls, what kind of strength keeps them going and helps them survive?’ Director Jia Zhangke makes a cameo appearance as Lang’s uncle.
