An enduring but fragile love story that spans 22 years… A masterfully poetic and pioneering fusion of the old and the new… An insightful reflection on the passage of time – how time has transformed contemporary China, how time has transformed Jia Zhang-ke’s own filmography… Caught by the Tides charts the failed romance between Qiao Qiao and Guao Bin, from the early 2000s to the present day. The film is based on footage across 22 years from Jia’s previous films – including Still Life, A Touch of Sin and Ash is Purest White – and follows the actors age naturally. Caught by the Tides, which premiered at Cannes, gives a new perspective to look into the profound transformation of China, but mostly draws a powerful portrait of a woman, from youth to middle age.
