To celebrate Lukas’ victory at the martial arts tournament and Tomas’ birthday party, two sisters organize a weekend at the country house. With their kids, they go swimming in a nearby lake, relax and discuss family finances. Unexpectedly, a near tragic accident strikes one of the children. Constantly pulling the rug under its audience forcing them to think outside their comfort zone and increasing the emotional weight of the film’s characters, director and cinematographer Laurynas Bareisa employs irregular repetition as a structural element of the story to highlight the various ways of reactions to trauma. ’The film essentially is about a group of people dealing with an almost tragic event that causes them to experience emotional trauma in different ways,’ says Bareisa who was inspired from his own experience when his young son almost drowned. Drowning Dry is Lithuania’s Oscar nominee.
