Generational trauma, social history, and folk horror intertwine like deep-set roots in Fréwaka, the first ever Irish-language horror. The film follows Shoo, a social worker, who is sent to care for an agoraphobic woman who lives in a remote village deep in the woods, ’past the fairy tree.’ The old woman fears the ’Na Sídhe’ – sinister entities who she believes abducted her decades before and have come back to collect a promise. As the two develop a strangely deep connection, Shoo is consumed by the old woman’s paranoia, rituals, and superstitions. In Fréwaka, the follow up to 2018 found footage horror The Devil’s Doorway, director Aislinn Clarke’s masterfully achieves to captivate the audience through mood horror and icy silences. Fréwaka had its premiere in Locarno.
