2024 Pingyao Special Jury Award
A captivating coming-of-age drama, Happyend paints a poignant portrait of teenage rebellion against a backdrop of social anxiety and dystopian unease. Set in a near-future Tokyo, Happyend follows Yuta and Kou, two inseparable friends and aspiring techno DJs. As the weight of looming disaster and omnipresent surveillance systems threaten their freedom, they find solace in music. However, a mischievous prank they devise at school sets in motion a series of events that challenge their sense of security and force them to confront a complex world. Follow up to the solemn documentary he directed on his father, Ryuichi Sakamoto: Opus, Neosora’s fiction feature debut premiered at Venice Film Festival.
