Exceling at novels and short films, Dag Johan Haugerud’s debut feature is a warm and playful tragicomedy about people who all mean well, but end up hurting one another. A nurse is scrutinised at work because she switches to speaking English when she gets nervous. A translator compromises her integrity when persuaded to translate a book she doesn’t believe in. An elderly woman and her daughter are humiliated when offered a huge sum of money as present from a relative. The women from all three stories are effortlessly linked together, painfully aware that everything is going exactly as it should, but something feels not normal. I Belong examines what happens when people stop acting like they’re supposed to and shows everyday situations that seem of little importance to one person but can feel like disasters to others.
