When two girls go missing, Paul Chartier, an impulsive young police recruit, is assigned to ‘Maldoror’. This secret unit has been set up to monitor a suspect sex offender. When the operation fails, fed up with the limits of the legal system, Chartier embarks on a solitary hunt that transforms into an obsession to bring down the culprits. Screened at Venice Film Festival out of competition, Maldoror was inspired by an infamous serial killer and a notorious crime case that transformed Belgium in the 1990s. ’My intention is to explore the nature of evil and the quest for justice through realistic and evocative fiction,’ says director Fabrice du Welz, who preferred rather to cinematically alter reality.
