2024 France Louis Delluc Prize–Best French Film of the Year
Renowned French director and screenwriter Alain Guiraudie’s latest feature that screened within Cannes Premiere is a captivating comedy-drama set in a picturesque village in Ardèche, France. In Misericordia, of which director Albert Serra is a producer, Jérémie, a man returning to his hometown for a funeral, finds himself entangled in a web of mystery and intrigue. A disappearance, a menacing neighbour, and a priest with enigmatic motives turn his brief visit into an unexpected odyssey. Guiraudie’s previous works, Staying Vertical and Stranger by the Lake, were screened at the Festival in earlier editions. The filmmaker’s exploration of desires, unspoken truths, and the complexities of human nature is a hallmark of his cinematic style. Guiraudie says, ‘I’ve put a lot of my teenage feelings into this film. It’s a way of universalising my personal story.’
*Scenes of violence/sex might disturb some viewers.
