Evoking Éric Rohmer and the French New Wave, Haugerud’s chatty comedy of morals and music stars the spectacular Andrea Bræin Hovig as Ingrid. The film follows Ingrid and a few of her acquaintances who are trying to write a song for the wedding of a mutual friend. Ingrid though, is more concerned with the death of her mother, which she might or might not have unwittingly caused. In the meantime, the creation of the song turns out to be more difficult to realize than expected. Made up of five chapters, Light from the Chocolate Factory brings up heavy themes such as responsibility and morals but in a humorous, musical and almost absurd tone. As usual, Haugerud paints incisive character portraits whose conversations are merged with classical music pieces that include Aleksandr Skrjabin, Lalo Schifrin, Claude Vivier, and Maurice Ravel.
