A family unravels under pressure in Ramon Zürcher’s captivating and unsettling chamber drama that explores the complexities of family dynamics and the fragility of peace. Set in the idyllic childhood home of two sisters, Karen and Jule, the film’s events unroll during a family reunion for their father’s birthday. As the house fills with relatives, long-held resentments surface, hidden desires and secrets set alight a fire, a war of words ensues, and a struggling bird is trapped in the chimney. ’It is the story of an unconventional emancipation, where a woman, Karen, sheds herself of the burden of her past,’ says Ramon Zürcher for the follow-up to The Girl and the Spider directed with his twin brother Silvan Zürcher. The Sparrow in the Chimney premiered at Locarno.
