Polish director Damian Kocur’s second feature, Under the Volcano, tells the story of a Ukrainian family on holiday on the island of Tenerife, Spain. When they arrive at the airport, they are informed that their flight is cancelled: Russia has invaded their homeland, Ukraine. Trapped on the island, the tourists are now refugees. A subtle, sensitive social drama with a humorous and melancholic atmosphere, Under the Volcano premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was Poland’s Oscar submission. ’I didn’t want to tell a story about the war itself. My film is about how apparent our security is, and how quickly, overnight, we can go from being tourists to refugees, regardless of the colour of our skin or our country of birth.’
