2026 Berlin Best Director

This is the story of one of the most influential and gifted figures in 20th century music, legendary jazz pianist Bill Evans following the death of his bassist and soulmate. New York, June 1961. Bill Evans has found his musical voice and created the perfect trio with drummer Paul Motian and bass player Scott LaFaro. Only a few days after a milestone recording, LaFaro dies tragically in a car crash. Numb with grief, Evans stops playing for the first time since his childhood. Shot partly on black-and-white 16mm film, Everybody Digs Bill Evans cuts between Evans’ present and future, days of serenity and chaos, portraying the inner life of a troubled musical genius. Borrowing its title from Evans’ second album, Everybody Digs Bill Evans stars Joachim Trier’s regular Anders Danielsen Lie as Bill Evans.

This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
