After losing her mental and physical balance at 34, Nao Yoshigai turns to Zen practice, re-examining the rhythms of eating, sleeping, and breathing at a retreat. Through this process, in the presence of strangers and a Zen master, she explores the body and self in relation to the world, seeking calm and healing beyond personal grief. Premiering at Berlinale Forum, Masayume is at once an archive of home videos, a diary-like documentary, and performance. It’s a meditative, sensory journey that hypnotises, moves between the personal and the universal. ‘“Masayume” is a Japanese word meaning what we see in a dream happens in real life. Like “Masayume,” says Yoshigai, ‘I hope this film is a form of healing for someone beyond myself, and that in the end it will heal the earth even just a little.’
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
