Filmed over 10 years, one girl’s epic journey from Syria to Germany and back again... She and her family navigate war, exile, and heartbreak in foreign lands (from İzmir to Cologne), illuminating the complexities of the refugee experience. The film opens like a very familiar refugee tragedy following Isra’a and her loved ones trapped in İzmir, Türkiye, planning to make a getaway to Germany in ‘Europe,’ and ends as she returns to her native Aleppo, Syria, as a young woman, mature, changed. Although charged with tensions across different societies, cultures, countries, genders, interfamily dynamics, identity, and the omnipresent shadow of war, One in A Million is filled with the hope of a new life, new opportunities, and freedom, as everyone in Isra’a’s family reiterates.
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
