It is difficult to describe Bi Gan's latest film definitively; rather, it can be described in different ways: a century-spanning tale of passion, a love letter to cinema, a history of cinema of sorts fuelled by illusions, an epic tale of immortality and mortality. At the main axis of its five distinct sections, each dedicated to a different sense, lies a monster that stubbornly keeps on dreaming in a dreamless world. Maintaining its audience’s gaze without letting it waver for a moment as it weaves together independent storylines through different film genres, all the while playing with colours and styles without boundaries, Resurrection is a unique cinematic experience, the film of a fairy-tale, a visual epic that finds the meaning of life in cinema.
