Eight-year-old Katya spends the summer with her grandparents in the Russian countryside. Time stands still, adults remain silent, and in the background, a war destroys lives. Meanwhile, kids are growing up and the clouds are flying. Nastia Korkia got inspiration for the poignant film from her own childhood experiences, interweaving an idyllic summer of a child with echoes of a distant war ––a threat that is always there, present but not close. Shot on 16mm film for dreamlike landscapes and harsh realities, Short Summer is ‘both cruel and poetic,’ according to critics, ‘masterful, a truly remarkable piece of cinema.’
