Steven Soderbergh, who has always navigated genres successfully, has two brilliant actors lighting up the screen in his latest film: Ian McKellen as the elderly painter Julian Sklar and Michaela Cole, known from I May Destroy You, as the young painter Lori. In his film, which had its world premiere in Toronto, Soderbergh delves into the behind-the-scenes world of art. The daughters of renowned painter Julian Sklar secretly hire Lori to forge and complete their ageing father's unfinished works. Their real intention is to augment their father's inheritance before he dies. Lori starts work as Julian's new assistant, but nothing is as it seems. Mocking the triangle of art, money and greed, The Christophers is a comedy of ambition, family, and art, featuring impressive performances from its two leading stars, filled with blackmail, betrayal, twists and Ian McKellen's extraordinary sharp wit.
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
